Plot summary

The film begins in 1720, when Bajirao (Ranveer Singh), a young and brave warrior, is appointed as the Peshwa (prime minister) of the Maratha Empire by Chhatrapati Shahu (Mahesh Manjrekar). Bajirao proves his skills as a leader and a strategist by expanding the Maratha territory through numerous battles against the Mughals and other enemies.

Meanwhile, in Bundelkhand, Mastani (Deepika Padukone), the daughter of Raja Chhatrasal (Benjamin Gilani) and his Persian wife Ruhani Begum (Zila Khan), leads her army against an invasion by Bangash Khan (Shabbir Ali). She seeks Bajirao's help as an ally, and he agrees to assist her. On the battlefield, they fight together and develop an attraction for each other.

Bajirao gives Mastani his dagger as a symbol of gratitude, which she interprets as a sign of marriage.
